Abstract :
The present study focused on the phytochemical screening of aqueous tuber peel extracts of Colocasia esculenta and Amorphophallus paeoniifolius. Plant peels are generally discarded as agricultural waste; however, they contain numerous bioactive compounds with medicinal and in-dustrial importance. In this study, fresh tuber peels were collected, shade dried, powdered, and extracted using dis-tilled water. The aqueous extracts were subjected to pre-liminary qualitative phytochemical analysis using standard biochemical methods to identify the presence of secondary metabolites. The results revealed the presence of alkaloids, flavonoids, phenolic compounds, tannins, saponins, glycosides, terpenoids, carbohydrates, proteins, and steroids in varying concentrations. The aqueous extract of Colocasia esculenta showed comparatively higher flavo-noid, phenolic, and tannin content, indicating good antiox-idant potential. In contrast, Amorphophallus paeoniifolius exhibited relatively higher alkaloid and terpenoid content associated with antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory ac-tivities. The presence of these phytochemicals demonstrates the therapeutic and nutritional significance of both tuber peel extracts. The study highlights the possibility of utilizing these underexploited agricultural wastes as natural sources of bioactive compounds for pharmaceutical applications, antioxidant formulations, and biodegradable composite film preparation. Therefore, the aqueous peel extracts of these tubers can be considered eco-friendly and sustainable materials for biomedical and packaging applications.
